1980 – Aeroflot introduces the Ilyushin Il-86, flying it on their Moscow-Tashkent route.

1975 – Russia’s answer to the Concorde, the Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic transport begins operations for Aeroflot, flying mail and freight between Moscow and Alma-Ata. Passenger would not begin until November 1977.

1972 – Operation Linebacker II sends 117 US Air Force B-52 Stratofortress bombers over Hanoi in the largest aerial attack on the city to date.

1948 – I.V. Federov, flying a Lavochkin La-176 becomes the first Russian to break the sound barrier.

1939 – The first Royal Australian Air Force squadrons to fight in World War II arrive in England.
